Myopia and Its Connection to Long Term Retinal Risk
Short sightedness, or myopia, is often thought of simply as a need for glasses, but higher degrees of myopia carry additional considerations for long term eye health that are worth understanding. As the eyeball becomes more elongated to accommodate significant myopia, the retina can become stretched and thinner in places, increasing susceptibility to certain complications.People with high myopia face a somewhat increased risk of retinal detachment, myopic macular degeneration and other structural retinal changes compared with those with little or no short sightedness. This does not mean these complications are inevitable, but retina specialist it does support the case for regular retinal examinations rather than relying solely on standard vision testing for glasses prescriptions.Childhood myopia management has also become an active area of interest, with various approaches now used to try to slow the progression of short sightedness during the years when the eye is still developing, potentially reducing long term retinal risk into adulthood.Anyone with significant myopia should mention this clearly during eye examinations, since it can influence how thoroughly the retina is checked, even during what might otherwise be treated as a routine visit.— 30 —
